How to know it is time to replace your pool liner

Outdoor pool in the reflective sun

When you initially installed your pool you knew that eventually, you would need to replace the liner. But how do you know if that time is now or later? There are several things to watch for when deciding if new vinyl pool liners are needed for your pool.

Here are 5 indicators that your liner needs to be replaced.

Fading.

Okay. You didn’t expect it to hold its colour forever. The UV inhibitors and other substances worked long and hard but now it looks drab. But is that a reason to scrap the liner? The problem is deeper than colour content. As the fading happens, plasticizers are reduced. This is the element that keeps the vinyl supple and pliable. So with increased fading comes a hardening of the liner. A brittle liner will not expand and contract as much and will be prone to cracking.

Wrinkles.

Wrinkles usually first appear on the bottom, corners and near the fittings. This can happen because of the of the quality of the vinyl, improper installation, or damage. Wrinkles are serious and should be considered when contemplating a replacement liner.

Tears and cracks.

While they may seem innocuous but they will only become larger. This will mean water loss into the base, which is usually vermiculite. This consistent pool leak can erode the base and eventually require costly pool structural repair. If the water level is greater than one inch in two weeks or less, this is not due to evaporation but because of a leak. Without repair or replacement, your pool can be damaged beyond repair.

Beads.

If you see a bead coming out of the track but won’t reinsert easily, consult with a professional. The technician will heat the liner to maximize elasticity and slowly stretch and reattach where necessary. If it cannot be repaired, it is time for new pool liners.

Stains.

This is not just a cosmetic issue. The discoloration is generally from minerals, algae, organic matter and other chemicals. If they are not easily removed and the sight of them becomes unbearable, time for a new liner.
